{"id":115134,"date":"2023-09-03T19:48:24","date_gmt":"2023-09-03T09:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/centurions-triumph-without-defensive-leader\/"},"modified":"2023-09-03T19:48:24","modified_gmt":"2023-09-03T09:48:24","slug":"centurions-triumph-without-defensive-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/centurions-triumph-without-defensive-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Centurions triumph without defensive leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">WERRIBEE Centrals will again make its way to the Geelong &amp; District Netball League (GDNL) Preliminary Final, defeating Thomson in today\u2019s (Sunday, September 3) First Semi-Final, 47-41.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Centurions needed to defeat Thomson the hard way at St Albans Reserve, playing without star defender Amanda O\u2019Malley who was omitted from the line-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">O\u2019Malley\u2019s absence didn\u2019t stop Werribee from attaining an early 10-7 lead at quarter time, led by the combination of Centrals\u2019 shooters Ellie Tubbs and Jenni Rothery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Thomson and Werribee endured a seesawing second quarter with neither side able to pull away from the other, as the Centurions held a 23-18 advantage at half-time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82374\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82374\" style=\"width: 824px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82374 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/My-Room-91-scaled.jpg?_t=1693733407\" alt=\"\" width=\"824\" height=\"549\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jenni Rothery shoots one of her 21 goals against Thomson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Werribee Centrals scored 13 times in the third quarter, limiting Thomson to eight goals in the same stretch, to take a commanding 10-goal lead into the fourth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Tigers attempted a final quarter comeback, outscoring Werribee 11-15 in the final minutes, but ultimately fell short after a gallant effort and were defeated by six goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Tubbs and Rothery combined for 44 of Werribee\u2019s 47 goals across four quarters, while Jacinta Savoury worked into the rotation to add three of her own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Thomson\u2019s Cheyenne Philpott and Emma Witham compiled 27 and 14 goals respectively, but it wasn\u2019t enough to get the Tigers over the line on this occasion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82375\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82375\" style=\"width: 743px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82375 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/My-Room-6-scaled.jpg?_t=1693733488\" alt=\"\" width=\"743\" height=\"495\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82375\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thomson goal-attack Emma Witham finished with 14 goals.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Melissa Prismall, Tubbs, and Brigitte Ardossi were listed as best-on-court for the Centurions, meanwhile Thomson\u2019s Courtney Leith, Morgan Byrne, and Calsey Wolak received similar praise for their efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Today\u2019s result was a repeat of last year\u2019s post-season meeting between the two clubs with Werribee Centrals eliminating Thomson in Week 2 of the GDNL finals, again by six goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Like last year as well, Werribee will need to defeat Winchelsea in next Saturday\u2019s (September 6) if it is to play in this year\u2019s Grand Final.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The winner of next week\u2019s contest between the Centurions and the Blues will play defending premiers East Geelong on September 16.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WERRIBEE Centrals will again make its way to the Geelong &amp; District Netball League (GDNL) Preliminary Final, defeating Thomson in today\u2019s (Sunday, September 3) First Semi-Final, 47-41.
