{"id":115987,"date":"2023-09-07T14:17:45","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T04:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/caught-by-surprise-seagulls-skipper-stunned-by-best-and-fairest-nod\/"},"modified":"2023-09-07T14:53:03","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T04:53:03","slug":"caught-by-surprise-seagulls-skipper-stunned-by-best-and-fairest-nod","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/caught-by-surprise-seagulls-skipper-stunned-by-best-and-fairest-nod\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cCaught by surprise\u201d: Seagulls skipper stunned by best and fairest nod"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BARWON Heads captain Luke Davis said he did not imagine Wednesday night\u2019s Bellarine Football Netball League Awards Night would end with him receiving the competition\u2019s biggest honour, the Les Ash Medal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But he graciously pointed to team-mate Oliver Wiltshire and said the young midfielder was just as, if not more, worthy of receiving the coveted award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Davis came out of nowhere to secure 20 votes during the 2023 BFL season.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75738\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75738\" style=\"width: 773px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-75738\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/061A9598-scaled.jpg?_t=1694059880\" alt=\"\" width=\"773\" height=\"515\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-F: The Team of the Season&#8217;s Barwon Heads representatives Oliver Wiltshire, Luke Davis, Harrison King, and Kyle Polley (absent).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Drysdale midfielder Ben Fennell\u2019s 22 votes ruled ineligible as a result of an on-field incident in Round 17, Davis became the first ruckman in four years to win the Les Ash Medal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI haven\u2019t really felt any emotions yet, to be honest, because I was just caught by surprise, which is why I went straight to Ollie during my speech,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn terms of where the award ranks in my career, I\u2019d much rather be playing for flags in September, so I haven\u2019t really put this into perspective at all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not something I have really fought for or thought of, maybe I\u2019ll reflect on it in a few years\u2019 time, but at this point I don\u2019t really know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75741\" style=\"width: 838px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-75741 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/061A9643-scaled.jpg?_t=1694059949\" alt=\"\" width=\"838\" height=\"931\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Les Ash Medallist Luke Davis with runner-up Lucas Anderson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Seagull was named best on ground in Round 2 against Portarlington to get his season under way, before adding two more votes the following weekend against Geelong Amateur.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Davis lodged votes in Round 4 (two votes), Round 5 (one vote), and Round 6 (one vote), before snagging back-to-back best-on-grounds in Round 8 against Queenscliff and in Round 9 against Anglesea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He polled three times in the second half of the season for Barwon Heads to take his total to 20 votes, one vote more than Torquay forward Lucas Anderson, who finished runner-up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOllie is just one example of the players around me who have really shone in 2023 and there are multiple other guys I could name, like Harrison King and Ryley Stuhldreier, and even just the forwards and the backs like Kyle Polley, who just consistently play good footy,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s what I try to do, come in and help a team that\u2019s already really successful and help the guys around me get a lot better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75737\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75737\" style=\"width: 894px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-75737\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/0G2A2734-scaled.jpg?_t=1694059810\" alt=\"\" width=\"894\" height=\"597\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Davis in action against Torquay last month.
