{"id":116676,"date":"2023-09-14T09:50:12","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T23:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=116676"},"modified":"2023-09-14T09:54:11","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T23:54:11","slug":"tigers-react-to-historic-9th-flag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/tigers-react-to-historic-9th-flag\/","title":{"rendered":"Tigers react to historic 9th flag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE town of Torquay is on a high after its football team defeated Drysdale (110-78) by 32 points last weekend to be crowned Bellarine Football League premiers for 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay head coach Dom Gleeson said it took a very strong team to rebound from a severe Grand Final loss, as the Tigers had in 2022, but that is exactly what his side was this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had nine changes from last year\u2019s team to this one, but for the team and the club to rebound the way they did, is just such a proud moment for me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 313px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/061A8580_04600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"313\" height=\"470\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Lucas Anderson and Nathan Mifsud combined for 12 goals to lift the Tigers to the win last weekend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also a humbling moment because I was in Ben Raidme\u2019s shoes 12 months ago, it was my last game, and I didn\u2019t want anyone else to go through that ever again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s local football, but it means so much to so many people. The amount of work Aaron Nesbitt, myself, Pete Raidme, Stuart Hill and Marty Lanyon have put into this year, we felt super prepared, and we got the result we were after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s game marked the end of the local footy career of Torquay great Ben Raidme after 270 games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision was made at the start of the pre-season, pretty much from the get-go, my wife Nat was supportive of me to go around one more time, and I didn\u2019t want to finish on the note of how last year ended,&#8221; Raidme said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 526px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/09\/IMG_4964_04622.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"526\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ben Raidme had a fairytale ending to his last game of local footy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to be part of something special, and I thought we could be special this year, so it\u2019s really allowed me to enjoy and savour the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll miss the people, the teammates, the connections you make.
