{"id":117103,"date":"2023-09-17T11:37:24","date_gmt":"2023-09-17T01:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/eagles-too-strong-for-swans-in-preliminary-final\/"},"modified":"2023-09-17T11:37:24","modified_gmt":"2023-09-17T01:37:24","slug":"eagles-too-strong-for-swans-in-preliminary-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/eagles-too-strong-for-swans-in-preliminary-final\/","title":{"rendered":"Eagles too strong for Swans in Preliminary Final"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEWTOWN &amp; Chilwell will face off with Colac in next week\u2019s Geelong Netball League Grand Final after defeating South Barwon in the Preliminary Final.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eagles eliminated the Swans, 57-49, yesterday afternoon (Saturday, September 16) at Leopold Memorial Park to reduce the finals pool to two teams.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84138\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84138\" style=\"width: 762px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84138 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/IMG_5888-scaled.jpg?_t=1694914392\" alt=\"\" width=\"762\" height=\"508\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Newtown defender Ruby Pekin-Schlicht.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Newtown and South Barwon came out of the starting blocks firing with 32 combined scores made in the first quarter, but it was the latter getting out to a 15-17 lead at the opening break.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eagles answered back in a big way with an 18-9 second term to lead by a commanding seven goals at half time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newtown &amp; Chilwell expanded its lead to nine scores at the final intermission, leading 45-36.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eagles held onto that margin until the final siren to claim the victory by nine goals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newtown shooter Uneeq Palavi put on her best performance of the finals notching up 51 goals alongside captain Julia Woolley, who pitched in six goals of her own.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84139\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84139\" style=\"width: 777px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84139 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/IMG_5874-scaled.jpg?_t=1694914566\" alt=\"\" width=\"777\" height=\"518\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">South Barwon goaler and captain Olivia Cameron.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palavi, Ruby Pekin-Schlicht and Amy Wirth were listed as the Eagles\u2019 best-on-court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Barwon shooter Ellen Doyle and Olivia Cameron did what they could muster at the scoring end, tacking on 39 and 10 goals respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maddison McKiernan, Charlotte Morey, and Georgia Corbett were named best-on-court for the Swans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newtown &amp; Chilwell and Colac\u2019s Grand Final next weekend will be the second year in a row the two sides meet to decide the Geelong premiership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Action commences next Saturday (September 23) from 3.20pm back at Leopold Memorial Park.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEWTOWN &amp; Chilwell will face off with Colac in next week\u2019s Geelong Netball League Grand Final after defeating South Barwon in the Preliminary Final.
