{"id":117725,"date":"2023-09-23T20:27:04","date_gmt":"2023-09-23T10:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/tigers-go-back-to-back-despite-eagles-charge\/"},"modified":"2023-09-23T20:27:04","modified_gmt":"2023-09-23T10:27:04","slug":"tigers-go-back-to-back-despite-eagles-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/tigers-go-back-to-back-despite-eagles-charge\/","title":{"rendered":"Tigers go back-to-back despite Eagles charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">ANOTHER Geelong Netball League premiership is on its way to Central Reserve following a thrilling one-goal Colac win over Newtown &amp; Chilwell this afternoon (Saturday, September 23) at Memorial Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Tigers and Eagles again met in the season decider following a heart-pumping 2022 Grand Final, but it was Colac again consolidating its rule at the top of the GNL, narrowly defeating Newtown &amp; Chilwell, 38-37.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Colac captain Emily Murfitt said it was the best feeling ever to celebrate winning the Grand Final as the skipper of her childhood club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cIt was just such a good feeling, but we had a scare late in the game.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84714\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84714\" style=\"width: 546px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84714 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/IMG_6671-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"546\" height=\"364\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84714\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colac&#8217;s supporters were out in full force. Photos: VINNIE VAN OORSCHOT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cWe knew they were gonna do that, we knew they were going to come out fighting in the fourth and it just showed us it was anyone\u2019s game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cOur girls did all they could to get those intercepts, I\u2019m super proud of our defenders, then it just fell to us to score of those possessions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cI didn\u2019t think I would be in this position at the start of the season, me being a premiership captain, it\u2019s just awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The GNL Grand Final was a game of inches from start to finish with the challengers edging out to a two-goal lead at the end of the first quarter, 9-11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Colac then managed to take control of the game, leading 21-18 at the main break.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84713\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84713\" style=\"width: 731px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84713 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/IMG_6659-scaled.jpg?_t=1695464469\" alt=\"\" width=\"731\" height=\"487\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84713\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colac coach Courtney Cuolahan has secured a flag for her childhood club in her first season back at the Tigers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">However, the Tigers put the squeeze on Newtown, getting out to a comfortable six-goal lead at three-quarter-time, leading 31-25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Eagles have served as the benchmark of the GNL for the better part of a decade and\u00a0showed exactly why, almost pulling off one of the most miraculous comebacks in GNL history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">A flurry of goals in the final minutes from Eagles shooters Uneeq Palavi and Julia Woolley saw the margin cut to one point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Unfortunately for Newtown, time was called before the Eagles could obtain the tying score, granting Colac its second flag in as many years and sending fans into rapture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Michelle and Bec Winch accounted for all of Colac\u2019s scores, tallying 28 and 10 respectively, while star defender Indya Forde was awarded the best-on-court medal for her efforts in the defensive third alongside Brooke Allan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84716\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84716\" style=\"width: 534px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84716 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/IMG_6701-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"356\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Indya Forde (right) was awarded best-on-court.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-84716\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/09\/IMG_6701.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Palavi amassed 31 goals for Newtown &amp; Chilwell, whereas Woolley provided an additional four.
