	{"id":118181,"date":"2023-09-29T15:18:54","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T05:18:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=118181"},"modified":"2023-10-02T15:28:12","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T04:28:12","slug":"committee-for-lorne-where-do-birds-go-to-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/committee-for-lorne-where-do-birds-go-to-die\/","title":{"rendered":"Committee for Lorne:  Where do birds go to die?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you ever walk along the beach, in the Otway forest, or even just down the main street in Lorne and marvel at our birdlife?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birds are everywhere \u2014 particularly in Lorne \u2014 indeed, so much so that the cockies have rapidly become Town Nuisance #1.\u00a0 Not only have they learned to prey on our tourists for inappropriate food handouts, but they have learned to raid and scavenge our bins, distributing rubbish from one end of the town to the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, while birds surround us in Lorne in their thousands \u2014 indeed, Lorne is a fitting twin to Bodega Bay north of San Francisco, where Alfred Hitchcock filmed his thriller &#8216;The Birds&#8217; \u2014 there is a conundrum.\u00a0 Why do we so rarely see dead ones?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An occasional carrion crow or magpie may be collateral road kill where, too intent on picking at a carcass, it has been too slow to escape an oncoming car.\u00a0 But, when one thinks about it, it is surprisingly rare to find a &#8216;dead-un&#8217; in the street, the bush, or on the beach.\u00a0 So, where do birds go to die?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several potential explanations, the first being their expected lifespan.\u00a0 For example, as the average lifespan of a sulphur-crested cockatoo is between 20 and 40 years [let&#8217;s say 30], if our local population numbered 900 birds, then in any given year, 30 birds might be expected to slip from this mortal coil &#8230; and that&#8217;s less than one a week.\u00a0 Even the Superb Fairywrens live for 5-6 years, so on the same basis, dead wrens would certainly not be thick on the ground.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Scientist briefly pondered the question in its weekly issue [19\/1\/22].\u00a0 Using their estimate of ~160 million small birds in the UK [a rubbery figure as other estimates range up to 400 million] and assuming an average bird lifespan of two to five years, the author concluded that a small bird dies somewhere in the UK every second.\u00a0 However, the chances of one dropping out of the sky onto your head are slim indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Scientist article and its reader responses added several other reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230; deceased small birds blend into the background: one could be within a metre or two of one and easily miss it, especially as dying birds [and animals] tend to crawl into hidden spaces \u2014 under a bush or into a hole in a tree \u2014 and fall asleep, forever.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230; many are eaten by predators with the only remains a small circle of feathers, quickly used by other animals as nesting material.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230; we only see dead animals on the road where they [a] haven&#8217;t had a chance to crawl away and [b] scavengers can&#8217;t easily eat them.\u00a0 Even then, magpies and crows are generally very good at dodging cars and escaping becoming roadkill.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230; \u00a0any bird [or animal] weakened by old age, illness or injury is easy meat for its predators and will be so rapidly killed and eaten before it can die of its health problems that the body will rarely be seen.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230; furthermore, nature disposes of corpses very quickly. Mammalian scavengers \u2014 rats, foxes, domestic and feral cats, quolls, or [in Tassie] Tasmanian devils \u2014 insects and their larvae [think flies and maggots], bacteria and fungi all recycle most carcasses within hours to a few days.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When commenting on the reasons for bird death, Gordon Ramel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/earthlife.net\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/earthlife.net<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [13\/7\/23] adds several other important causes. He claims that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230; most birds do <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> die a natural death, with the number one reason behind bird mortality being windows!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221;\u00a0 While I find this a little hard to swallow, he cites research to back this claim, including an interesting graphic from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sibleyguides.com\/conservation\/causes-of-bird-mortality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.sibleyguides.com\/conservation\/causes-of-bird-mortality\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though he uses 2003 US data.\u00a0 He notes that several man-made obstacles can lead to bird death, including windows, mobile phone towers, high-tension wires, cars, wind turbines, and other obstacles.\u00a0 Expanding further, he maintains that:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0 windows provide the main threat. Birds are thought to hit windows when they see their natural habitat reflected in the glass and mistake it for a place to perch or hunt.\u00a0 Prevention includes reducing or breaking up the window&#8217;s reflection.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230; collisions often occur in the evening or at night when birds are attracted to light &#8230; NB: the 2016 UK FFA Cup Final was briefly halted to allow goalkeeper Danny Vukovic to rescue a seagull that a sharply-crossed soccer ball had felled.\u00a0 The seagull survived.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230; electrocutions of large birds like raptors occur if they contact live electrical wires.\u00a0 Though the numbers are very small, this threat is significant because the affected bird populations are low.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;&#8230; pesticide poisoning is suspected to kill over 72 million birds\/year in the US alone.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this data is interesting, few, if any, of these causes apply directly to our Lorne birds.\u00a0 They live in relative safety \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">except<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the ever-present threat of domestic and feral cats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, the Surf Coast Shire surveyed residents to find out <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What matters to you most on your coast&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Interestingly, the risk to native wildlife from cats was a clear third among the many options listed by the Shire.\u00a0 In response, the Council is changing its policy &#8230; a change that I think is a welcome one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 30 September 2023, all cats within the Surf Coast Shire must be confined to their owner&#8217;s premises <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under a 24-hour cat curfew<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adopted by the Council<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The 24-hour curfew <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replaces<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the current one, which requires cats in urban-zoned areas to be securely confined to the owner&#8217;s premises between 8pm and 6am.\u00a0 Note it is now a Shire-wide policy and is not just limited to town boundaries; Please let us know if we can help with this.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the sun comes out and the weather warms, it is timely for a couple of warnings, especially for our visitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Great Ocean Road is one of the most scenic anywhere in the world, but it needs to be respected with appropriate speed, alertness, courtesy and concentration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speed limits can be annoying, but they are there for a reason, and are being enforced by our local Police and Highway Patrol.\u00a0 It can make your trip rather expensive if you get caught!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, crossing the double white lines on Mountjoy Parade is an offence, and you will be penalised if caught.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yes, the laws do apply to motorcyclists!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things are hotting up at the Anglers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Sunday we saw major fishing competition number 5 with the best turnout of fishers for several months.\u00a0 It was great to see some new faces on the podium with Louis Shanahan taking out the Juniors in front of regulars, the Hunter brothers.\u00a0 In the Seniors, Ed Fry took first prize with a fine snapper in front of Paul Spizzica and Barry Hayward.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday October 6, music returns to the Anglers with the Vinyl Ragdolls playing from 6pm.
