ACTIVE transport advocates have welcomed a new shared use-path as part of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade.<\/p>\n

The 4km path is the road’s first continuous connection for walking and cycling between Belmont and Charlemont.<\/p>\n

It will cater for active transport options amid expected increasing demand from local population growth.<\/p>\n

The path features an underpass below Waurn Ponds Creek Bridge, allowing users to avoid crossing Barwon Heads Road on their journey towards the road’s western side and South Barwon Reserve.<\/p>\n

Another aspect is the 200m elevated section at the Geelong end which overlooks Jerringot Wetland and is decorated with etchings of native bird footprints from Traditional Owner and artist BJ O’Toole.<\/p>\n

New signalised crossings and street lighting have also been implemented along the path to make walking and riding safer for all.<\/p>\n

Active Geelong executive support member, Pat Murnane welcomed the new shared-use path “as a local benchmark for community infrastructure”.<\/p>\n

“It encourages people to take up active transport options.<\/p>\n

“More people will be able to walk or ride to where they need to be, which leads to positive outcomes for health and wellbeing.”<\/p>\n

“I encourage people young and old to take advantage of this wonderful asset for our community.”<\/p>\n

Major Roads Projects Victoria program director Tim Price thanked all partners for the roll-out of the new design.<\/p>\n

I thank construction partners Decmil, BMD and BildGroup for working with MRPV to deliver the shared-use path ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n

“I also thank the community for its patience while we built this important community infrastructure as part of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade.”<\/p>\n

The shared-use path project has been completed five months ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n
