LOCAL veterans from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and emergency services first responders have learned about the many services and benefits available to them and their families at a session hosted by the Torquay RSL.<\/p>\n

The branch of the national organisation presented a mental wellbeing afternoon on Monday last week, with speakers at the Torquay RSL’s Veterans’ Advocacy Centre stressing the message “You are never alone”.<\/p>\n

Speakers outlined range of services and benefits available, including special activities at the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club that would suit veterans and first responders, the value of having a PTSD Assistance Dog, psychological services available locally, and peer support for partners and families.<\/p>\n

Torquay RSL advocacy and wellbeing co-ordinator Phil Pickering said the event was a great success, judging by the reactions of the attendees and their informal chats with speakers and other veterans and first responders at the end of the day.<\/p>\n

“Veterans and emergency personnel can experience severe mental trauma leading to disastrous effects on partners and children.<\/p>\n

“‘You are never alone’ is our way of helping achieve our mission of support for veterans and first responders, and this event helped a number of people who previously had no idea what was available to help them.”<\/p>\n

He said the Advocacy and Wellbeing Centre, staffed by highly experienced compensation advocates as well as wellbeing advocates, enabled the Torquay RSL to assist those in need of help.<\/p>\n

“There are many services and benefits available to help our colleagues, however, many think they cannot be helped,” Mr Pickering said. “That is completely incorrect.”<\/p>\n
