A LOCAL lifesaver is raising awareness for men’s mental health during the month of November.<\/p>\n

Torquay resident and Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club member Mark Scotland has been named one of Life Saving Victoria’s Movember ambassadors, spreading the word on mental health among men throughout the life-saving community.<\/p>\n

“I’m incredibly proud to be part of LSV’s team for Movember this year, particularly as an ambassador alongside our other ambassador and LSV staff member Sheila Langley,” Mr Scotland said.<\/p>\n

“It’s a great platform to be a part of highlighting such a big issue and spreading the message surrounding men’s health and well-being.<\/p>\n

“Just to be a part of a fundraising team like this is a really big deal to me.”<\/p>\n

A teacher in Geelong by trade, Mr Scotland has signed up to fundraise for Movember for the fourth time.<\/p>\n

In addition to fundraising and growing out his facial hair, he is also running 60 kilometres throughout the month as LSV aims to chase down its $10,000 fundraising target.<\/p>\n

The 60km distance is in memory of the 60 men lost globally to suicide every hour.<\/p>\n

“In volunteer organisations, nobody does just one job, and you have these amazing people continuing to put their hand up to help,” Mr Scotland said.<\/p>\n

“Being mentally well is important for lifesaving. You are performing rescues and first aid and need to communicate with your team and the public.<\/p>\n

“Self-care and building your emotional intelligence are crucial in continuing your work as a first responder.”<\/p>\n

Mr Scotland said LSV did a great job of supporting local clubs to provide its members with the proper mental health mechanisms.<\/p>\n

“Generally speaking, the lifesaving community does very well keeping its members supported.<\/p>\n

“All clubs have welfare officers, LSV has on offer an employee assistance program readily available so anytime our members can call that number and get assistance, and since moving to Fairhaven SLSC nine years ago I have felt welcomed since day one.”<\/p>\n
