{"id":121511,"date":"2023-11-17T04:22:10","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T17:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=121511"},"modified":"2023-11-16T12:29:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-16T01:29:00","slug":"arnhem-land-to-wadawurrung-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/arnhem-land-to-wadawurrung-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Arnhem Land to Wadawurrung country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An exhibition showcasing the work of 19 First Nations artists from the Northern Territory is headed for Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>Titled Barrku wanga\/going to a faraway place, the exhibition features paintings and weavings that interpret the stories of Yolngu cultural lore learned through song and dance.<\/p>\n<p>Exhibiting artists are part of the Bula&#8217;bula Arts Centre located in Ramingining, Arnhem Land, 400km east of Darwin.<\/p>\n<p>The arts centre represents a spectrum of the 16 clan families who live in the area and plays a role in the preservation of traditional practices, ceremonies, language, art and spirituality.<\/p>\n<p>The name Bula&#8217;bula translates as the tongue, or voice of the kangaroo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87141\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87141\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87141 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/11\/IMG_1580_84662.jpg?_t=1700047495\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"546\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87141\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peter Gambung is an elder for the Gupapuyngu people of North East Arnhem Land. His work will also appear in the exhibition<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition evolved with the support of Platform Arts, the Northern Territory government, and the Australian government&#8217;s Indigenous visual arts industry support program.<\/p>\n<p>Bula&#8217;bula Arts executive director Mel George said it was exciting to be able to bring artists and their work from Arnhem Land to Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition is dedicated to Geelong specifically and involves Yolngu artists travelling to meet with local Wadawurrung artists and explore the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We jumped at the chance to connect with a smaller city such as Geelong and meet with Wadawurrung people,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Coming from remote Ramingining, we&#8217;re so far away, and our town has only 700 people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yolngu people don&#8217;t have many opportunities to travel, and when they do, it&#8217;s often to major cities, which can be overwhelming.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87143\" style=\"width: 522px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87143 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/11\/IMG_1581_84625.jpg?_t=1700047495\" alt=\"\" width=\"522\" height=\"594\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artist and Bula&#8217;bula Arts chair, Andrew Wanamilil Malibirr (pictured), will attend the exhibition&#8217;s opening event on November 18 along with artist Steve Wanamilil Malibirr and Bula&#8217;bula Arts executive director, Mel George.
