{"id":121813,"date":"2023-11-23T04:00:39","date_gmt":"2023-11-22T17:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=121813"},"modified":"2023-11-23T08:54:03","modified_gmt":"2023-11-22T21:54:03","slug":"coker-helps-to-spearhead-new-parliamentary-friends-of-surfing-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/coker-helps-to-spearhead-new-parliamentary-friends-of-surfing-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Coker helps to spearhead new Parliamentary Friends of Surfing Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 50 of Australia&#8217;s top politicians joined world tour surfing competitors, Paralympians and industry experts to launch Australia&#8217;s first Parliamentary Friends of Surfing group at Parliament House in Canberra last week.<\/p>\n<p>The Parliamentary Friends of Surfing Group will aim to promote surfing and create opportunities including for politicians to attend surfing events and interact with legends of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Among those in attendance at the launch event were Member for Corangamite and group co-chair Libby Coker, 2024 WSL world tour athlete and Jan Juc local India Robinson, Surfers for Climate co-founder Belinda Baggs and Greens senator for lutruwita\/Tasmania, Peter Whish-Watson.<\/p>\n<p>Surfing Australia highlighted many key initiatives and goals for the sport over the next decade, including the opportunity to host the ISA World Surfing Games for five consecutive years (2025 &#8211; 2029).<\/p>\n<p>Parliamentarians marked the significant occasion by signing a group surfboard and the Parliamentary Friends of Surfing co-chairs, including Ms Coker received a special surfboard fin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121818\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121818\" style=\"width: 508px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121818 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/0D3A0080_39566-1.jpg?_t=1700618752\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/0D3A0080_39566-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/0D3A0080_39566-1-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/0D3A0080_39566-1-768x689.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker MP speaking at the launch event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Coker said surfing was a huge draw card across Australia, particularly in her local government area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So many people come to Torquay, Thirteenth Beach and, of course, Bells Beach because of the amazing surf and that&#8217;s why surfing is so important for our local economy, jobs, and our lifestyle,&#8221;
