{"id":122731,"date":"2023-12-07T04:00:06","date_gmt":"2023-12-06T17:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=122731"},"modified":"2023-12-06T14:00:59","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T03:00:59","slug":"kennys-3000-mo-will-help-save-a-bro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/kennys-3000-mo-will-help-save-a-bro\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenny&#8217;s $3,000 mo will help save a bro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A TORQUAY local has &#8220;stripped back his mask&#8221; and raised more than $3,000 for men&#8217;s mental health and suicide prevention throughout an inspiring Movember campaign.<\/p>\n<p>During November, hospitality worker Tom Kenny ran, swam, walked, held a special fundraising music night and grew a thick moustache.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kenny said the Movember cause was once close to his heart, having been directly affected by mental health and suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the month, he said he often referred to his moustache as his &#8220;mask&#8221;, and a mechanism which took the attention away from things he didn&#8217;t like about himself.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was very proud of his efforts and his strength in finally shaving his moustache after eight years to promote the cause.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My original goal was to raise $1,000, so to get $3,000 was awesome,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was just rapt with the support, which all kicked off with a fantastic music night from some of my close mates on November 5.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While I unfortunately couldn&#8217;t do my 12 hours straight of running due to a foot injury, I jumped in the pool for four hours and swum 8.5km.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I also really tried to open up space throughout the month for my mates and people to chat about their feelings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No matter how hard the conversations are, they are worth having.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122736\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122736\" style=\"width: 401px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122736 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/12\/ghhj.jpg?_t=1701831507\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/12\/ghhj.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/12\/ghhj-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/12\/ghhj-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/12\/ghhj-1152x1536.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr Kenny swum 8.5km in place of doing 12 hours of non-stop running due to his injury. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kenny said physical activity and speaking up about his feelings has been key in getting his mental health back on track and recommend others do the same.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s certainly worked for me from both a physical and mental standpoint,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After I started working in hospitality, I didn&#8217;t have the time to continue playing team sports and missed out on having the camaraderie a sport like football brings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Getting a few mates together and just having a leisurely jog can work wonders and provide the space to chat about things.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s worth the early wake ups, or the cold weather.
