MORE than 200 people will shine a light on cancer at this Sunday’s Lighthouse Classic on the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n

The January 14 event will see members of the community walk or run 12km from Urquhart Bluff to Aireys Inlet Lighthouse to raise funds for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI).<\/p>\n

The Lighthouse Classic was launched in 2021 by the late Janet Jones OAM in the hope of helping others touched by cancer and sharing a love of being in the outdoors.<\/p>\n

Prior to her passing, Ms Jones was a board member of FECRI, helped to kickstart the Starfish Nippers program in Australia and worked for 17 years in special education in Ballarat.<\/p>\n

Janet’s son Harry Jones said excitement was at fever pitch ahead of Sunday’s event.<\/p>\n

“We can’t wait to see all the smiling faces on Sunday shining a light on cancer and supporting this great cause,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Last year we had hundreds of people join us for the group walk, and many others do it virtually or on another date. I’m sure this year will be no different.<\/p>\n

“We hope the fourth installment is the best one yet. We have been thrilled to have received so much support thus far.”<\/p>\n

Each entrant will receive a commemorative 2024 Lighthouse Classic pink cap upon arrival at Urquhart Bluff.<\/p>\n

Those unable to join the group walk from Urquhart Bluff at 9am are invited to choose their own time to complete the challenge during January.<\/p>\n

The Lighthouse Classic has raised more than $150,000 in three years to fund vital cancer research.<\/p>\n
