TORQUAY Sailing Club is encouraging the Surf Coast community to give sailing a go this summer, opening registrations for its Term 1 program.<\/p>\n
Club committee member and treasurer Madeline Gillard says the club is eager to welcome its next wave of sailors as various Summer Courses will become available to children under 18 years of old and adults from Monday, January 15.<\/p>\n
“It’s a great alternative to Nippers for Surf Coast locals,” Ms Gillard said.<\/p>\n
“It’s something different and it teaches water safety in another way.<\/p>\n
“It’s a really popular sport that can take you literally all over the world.<\/p>\n
“We’ve got sailors with a full range of abilities, such as Fletcher and Georgia Warren-Myers who are world champion sailors, and then all the way down to our beginners.<\/p>\n
“There’s no better way to start out in sailing than as a young tacker at our club.”<\/p>\n
Five days long, the Summer Holiday Program predominantly caters to beginners and early intermediates aged between 8-15 using Hobie Wave boats. The program also introduces participants to O’pen Skiff boat basics.<\/p>\n
The program will run over five days from January 15 to January 19 and then again as a seperate program from January 22 to January 26 (9am to 12 noon).<\/p>\n
The club also confirmed an afternoon program will run concurrently to the Week 1 program from 1pm to 4pm each day.<\/p>\n
Ms Gillard said the club offered a lively atmosphere that welcomed all new members.<\/p>\n
“We’re a very modest and small sailing club and school run by volunteers, but it’s such a welcoming environment that features young sailors and families all the way through to retirees.<\/p>\n
“It can be as fun\/social or as competitive as you like, but it’s a great way to getting a foot in the door for the sport.”<\/p>\n
