MORE than 200 people turned out to shine a light on cancer at the fourth Lighthouse Classic group fundraising event.<\/p>\n

Participants enjoyed a mix of beach and clifftop walking from Urquhart Bluff to the Aireys Inlet Lighthouse and back to raise funds for cancer research at the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI).<\/p>\n

Sunday’s event paid tribute to Lighthouse Classic founder Janet Jones OAM, who bravely fought cancer for over 33 years before her passing in 2021.<\/p>\n

Janet’s son and event coordinator Harry Jones said the community support for the event was “very touching”.<\/p>\n

“It was just a great morning connecting with friends, family and the wider community while fundraising for an important cause,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We had a mix of runners and walkers doing the event and it was the perfect conditions for both to thrive.<\/p>\n

“Every participant touched the lighthouse when they arrived at the lighthouse in honour of someone, they know who has been affected by cancer.<\/p>\n

“We thank everyone for coming along and our family is thrilled to have had your support.”<\/p>\n

Throughout the month of January, others will be choosing their own route to shine a light on cancer.<\/p>\n

Participants will complete the Lighthouse Classic in Manly, Rottnest Island and as far away as India, the United States and United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n

With just over a fortnight to go, the fundraising proponent of the event has ticked over $28,500.<\/p>\n

The Lighthouse Classic has now donated over $150,000 to cancer research since its inception.<\/p>\n
