CLIMATE change-induced erosion is severely threatening the Surf Coast Walk, leading the Great Ocean Road Coast & Parks Authority (GORCPA) to launch a vital adaptation plan for the trail between Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving Club and Rocky Point in Torquay.<\/p>\n
Independent geotechnical reports predict a worrying 1.5-meter cliff line recession in the next two decades along the Jan Juc to Torquay Cliff Top Trail.<\/p>\n
This alarming data has propelled GORCPA to take action.<\/p>\n
According to GORCPA as the cliff recedes, sections of the coastal trail will progressively become unsafe, and will need to be permanently closed.<\/p>\n
Director Infrastructure and Planning, Cath Olive said the organisation was planning for the future.<\/p>\n
“Climate change impacts, including large swells and high tides continue to erode sections of the coast, prompting the need for immediate adaptation planning.” Ms Olive said.<\/p>\n
In response to the immediate risk, GORCPA has implemented interim safety measures, including barriers, to maintain the trail’s safe use.<\/p>\n
However, due to persistent safety concerns, the Rocky Point beach access stairs, closed in 2022, will remain so.<\/p>\n
GORCPA have previously moved other sections of the Surf Coast Walk at Anglesea and Aireys Inlet in response to similar cliff and landslip risks.<\/p>\n
In an effort to involve the community, GORCPA is hosting a series of ‘Walk and Talk’ sessions in January.<\/p>\n
These events aim to educate locals and visitors about the current conditions and the steps being taken for the trail’s management.<\/p>\n
“The trail is currently safe to use, and we continue to closely monitor the trail from the ground and air, with the use of latest technology,” Ms Olvie said.<\/p>\n
“I encourage all who value the trail to join our upcoming Walk and Talks, to learn more about the conditions and help shape future decisions for the area.”<\/p>\n
