{"id":127184,"date":"2024-02-04T10:42:17","date_gmt":"2024-02-03T23:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=127184"},"modified":"2024-02-04T10:45:19","modified_gmt":"2024-02-03T23:45:19","slug":"algal-bloom-detected-at-cosy-corner-beachgoers-urged-to-avoid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/algal-bloom-detected-at-cosy-corner-beachgoers-urged-to-avoid\/","title":{"rendered":"Algal bloom detected at Cosy Corner, beachgoers urged to avoid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">SWIMMERS are being warned to avoid swimming at Cosy Corner Beach following the <a title=\"https:\/\/emergency.vic.gov.au\/respond\/?fbclid=IwAR1SAn8_RNo1fplIxNf3YdeoUqlLsmxGfIxAbJGUTmFASxvYgv3nOCnmOAg#!\/warning\/32654\/moreinfo\" href=\"https:\/\/emergency.vic.gov.au\/respond\/?fbclid=IwAR1SAn8_RNo1fplIxNf3YdeoUqlLsmxGfIxAbJGUTmFASxvYgv3nOCnmOAg#!\/warning\/32654\/moreinfo\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-ogsc=\"\">detection of an algal bloom<\/a> early this morning (Sunday, February 4).<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Vic Emergency confirmed testing at the popular beach is under way, urging beachgoers not to swim in the affected area and to avoid direct contact with the affected water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) advises if anyone comes into contact with affected water to immediately leave, remove any traces of algae by washing and rinsing skin and hair, place contaminated clothes and wetsuit in clean, cool water, and wash and dry all clothing (including wetsuits) and equipment in clean water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cPlease keep an eye on the Vic Emergency account today for updates, but current advice is to avoid Cosy due to a Blue Green Algae bloom,\u201d a Torquay Surf Life Saving Club spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is a great reminder to always check the conditions of the beach you are planning to swim in daily before entering the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a hot one today so please remember to wear and reapply sunscreen, stay hydrated (think water), seek shade for extra cover, swim between the flags, and surf outside the flags.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Boating and fishing remains unaffected due to the algal bloom, however, users should exercise extra caution and avoid eating crabs, mussels, oysters, and crustaceans from the affected waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">If you are feeling unwell after coming in contact with waters in or around Cosy Corner, visit a doctor or call Nurse on Call on <a title=\"tel:1300 606 024\" href=\"tel:1300 606 024\" data-ogsc=\"\">1300 606 024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">If pets are unwell after coming in contact with contaminated water, speak to a local vet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">DEECA is expected to provide an update on the situation at 5pm today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SWIMMERS are being warned to avoid swimming at Cosy Corner Beach following the detection of an algal bloom early this morning (Sunday, February 4).
