{"id":127243,"date":"2024-02-06T10:03:04","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T23:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/cougars-named-for-2024\/"},"modified":"2024-02-06T10:06:03","modified_gmt":"2024-02-05T23:06:03","slug":"cougars-named-for-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/cougars-named-for-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Cougars named for 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SOME new and familiar faces will suit up for the Geelong Cougars in 2024 with one major signing switching sides to join Gerard Murphy&#8217;s championship-winning unit.<\/p>\n<p>The Cougars announced its Victorian Netball League Championship squad in late-January, revealing an elite-level roster with Geelong&#8217;s best local players filling out the Cougars&#8217; first team.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy and the club announced Queenscliff A Grader and defender Charli Nicol will join the Cougars for 2024, making the move over from fellow VNL side City West Falcons.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 358px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/02\/2H3A3886_25565.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"537\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zanna Woods, now signed at Ocean Grove, has been named in this year&#8217;s Geelong Cougars line-up. Photo: MARCEL BERENS\/SPORTS MEDIA IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old stopper joins a formidable defensive unit alongside Colac Tigers defenders and two-time reigning Geelong Netball League premiers Brooke Allan and Indya Forde.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Charli sort of replaces Tori Honner in rounding out our circle defenders. Tori has decided to take a year off so we&#8217;ll see what comes next when we get to that, but we&#8217;re excited to welcome Charli to the side,&#8221; Murphy said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s come through the state program and she&#8217;s currently trying out for the junior Australian squad as well, and we expect her to really compliment Brook and Indya&#8217;s styles as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re keen to see how she goes in the next level and focusing on her execution, intensity, and her work rate a bit more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Division 1 defender Ashlee Smith is also in the line-up.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy&#8217;s experienced midcourt of Ally O&#8217;Connor (South Warrnambool) and Kaitlyn Sheringham (Bell Park) will remain with the side, while Division 1 players Kiahna Fallon (South Barwon) and Charlotte Morey (South Barwon) make the ascension into the first team.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 299px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/02\/0G2A4389_25537.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"448\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Once opponents, Daisy O&#8217;Kane (left) and Charli Nicol (right) will now be Cougars teammates. Photo: MICHAEL CHAMBERS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Newly signed Ocean Grove shooter Zanna Woods was again named to the Cougars shooting third alongside former Torquay goaler (Myrtleford) Daisy O&#8217;Kane and reigning Geelong Netball League best-and-fairest from St Joseph&#8217;s, Emma Buwalda.<\/p>\n<p>Buwalda became the first Joeys member to win the league honour since Honner in 2016 and was a key member of the Cougars&#8217; championship side in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It can take time to adjust to the physicality of VNL netball from an intensity standpoint, and for Emma she&#8217;s played against Australian Netball Championship players, she&#8217;s trained with Magpies and Vixens, because of that she did an awesome job for us last year in her first year,&#8221; Murphy said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/02\/2H3A0245_25580.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"340\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GNL best and fairest winner Emma Buwalda (far-left) will undertake her second Geelong Cougars campaign.
