A TORQUAY local is hoping to make a huge difference next month by diving in to raise funds for youth mental health and suicide.<\/p>\n

James Wilson-Browne, 29, is completing ReachOut’s Laps for Life challenge throughout the month of March.<\/p>\n

ReachOut provide a safe, online place for young people to chat anonymously, get support, and feel better.<\/p>\n

The Surfing Victoria staff member has challenged himself to swim more than 15km at RACV Torquay and to raise more $1,000 for the cause.<\/p>\n

Mr Wilson Browne said personal experience and the “current mental health crisis” are key motivators for completing the mission.<\/p>\n

“It [mental illness] and youth suicide has been on the rise lately, and something that has affected many of us on the Surf Coast,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s a grim situation, particularly since the pandemic and its adverse effects on peoples mental, social and physical health.<\/p>\n

“This challenge and being in the stillness of the water is a great way for me to give back and get behind a good cause.”<\/p>\n

Mr Wilson-Browne encouraged anyone seeking support to speak up and think about using ReachOut as a mechanism for positive change.<\/p>\n

“Reach Out are doing a fantastic job of concentrating on youth mental health and working to decrease youth suicide,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Everyone knows someone going through something or is going through something themselves.<\/p>\n

“Anything I can do to help change the statistics and save one person is definitely so worth it.”<\/p>\n
