A BELLS BEACH local is celebrating his 70th birthday by making his 10th journey to the west to compete in the South32 Rottnest Channel Swim.<\/p>\n

Colin Brodie is now driving from the Surf Coast with his caravan to partake in what is regarded as “one of the nation’s toughest open water swims” on February 24.<\/p>\n

More than 2,600 participants from around the world have registered to compete in the famous 19.7km swim from Cottesloe to Rottnest Island.<\/p>\n

Mr Brodie first competed in the swim in 2009, and has since competed in team swims, tandem solos and solo swims.<\/p>\n

The 69-year-old, who helped to create the Rock2Ramp event in Anglesea 25 years ago, has been in training for the past six months and has even imposed a personal alcohol ban to make sure he gets all he can out of himself later this month.<\/p>\n

Mr Brodie has been training hard for the race over the past six months both in the pool and in the ocean.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mr Brodie said he was absolutely hooked on the Western Australian swim and couldn’t wait for the day to arrive.<\/p>\n

“I’ve already started the journey out west with my wife and I’m so excited to again be part of this world class event.<\/p>\n

“This is my 10th time heading over, and my second one consecutively after the pandemic with the caravan in tow.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been training as I go in the pools and swim spots along Victoria and South Australia, so I’m feeling really prepared.<\/p>\n

“It’s just such a great event. The volunteers, the swimmers and everything in between.<\/p>\n

“I’ve got the bug completely. I’ve been bitten.”<\/p>\n

Mr Brodie hopes conditions will be near-perfect for the crossing.<\/p>\n

“The first year I did a solo it was a shocking year of conditions, and it took me over 10 hours!” he said.<\/p>\n

“I did that one when I was 10 years ago when i was 60, so I know I can put up with whatever conditions it throws up to us.<\/p>\n

“It’s obviously more than just jumping in and swimming. Without the support I get from friends and family, it’s not possible mentally or physically.<\/p>\n

“What doesn’t kill you, keeps you younger. I truly can’t wait.”<\/p>\n
