THE Stribling Reserve basketball stadium in Lorne has been temporarily closed due to an outbreak of mould underneath a section of floorboards.<\/p>\n
The Surf Coast Shire is investigating the cause of the mould, which was discovered earlier this month.<\/p>\n
According to the shire’s website, mould treatment specialists were on site on Monday last week sealing the stadium space and removing sports equipment, with both the stadium and equipment to be cleaned and treated to remove mould.<\/p>\n
Following cleaning, sports equipment has been stored temporarily in containers on-site, and is available for use by the neighbouring Lorne P-12 College.<\/p>\n
Specialists have found moisture under the floor and are considering treatment options.<\/p>\n
The shire stated the moisture may have been caused by tree litter blocking pipes and pits, and\/or rain runoff from the site driveway, and inadequate ventilation could also be a factor.<\/p>\n
“We have liaised with the Barwon South West Public Health Unit in relation to potential health risks associated with mould exposure.<\/p>\n
Health authorities advise that most people are unlikely to be affected by exposure to mould.<\/p>\n
“For some people exposure to mould spores can lead to temporary symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, and wheezing. They can also increase the risk of respiratory infections.<\/p>\n
“There is a higher risk for people with allergy to mould, or who have asthma or lung disease, chronic illnesses such as diabetes, or weakened immune systems.<\/p>\n
“Any stadium users with respiratory or related concerns should consult a GP.”<\/p>\n
The city is liaising with Lorne P-12 College, members of the Stribling Reserve Community Asset Committee, and Stribling Reserve user groups.<\/p>\n
The nearby Stribling Reserve Pavilion is not affected, and remains open.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
