{"id":12980,"date":"2018-06-06T07:59:41","date_gmt":"2018-06-05T21:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=12980"},"modified":"2018-06-12T09:07:20","modified_gmt":"2018-06-11T23:07:20","slug":"celtic-festival-arrives-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/celtic-festival-arrives-this-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Celtic Festival arrives this weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Touted by the New York Times as \u201cthe best folk band to have come out of Scotland in the past 20 years\u201d, The Paul McKenna Band is set to blow crowds away at this year\u2019s National Celtic Festival.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The June 8-11 festival arrives to Portarlington\u2019s foreshore this weekend and Paul McKenna said after performing as a solo artist last year, was looking forward to returning with his bandmates Ewan Baird, Conor Markey, Robbie Greig and Conal McDonagh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a lot different performing in a band compared to as a solo act, when it\u2019s just you you\u2019ve got a little bit more freedom on stage, you can change it up a bit more,\u201d McKenna said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a band, though, you can\u2019t but it\u2019s a bigger sound and more fun, you can play more instrumentals that get people up and dancing a bit more. It\u2019s a completely different kind of show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Glasgow, he said the band had been in Australia for two weeks having returned from performing in Canada, and prior to that had been working on their new album.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to be back in Australia, the biggest show we ever played was here was on New Year\u2019s Eve at the Woodford Folk Festival, that was huge. Performing live is great fun, it\u2019s music you love playing and it\u2019s a great feeling to be able to play live, especially at festivals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best thing about a Celtic festival is that everyone knows the type of music you\u2019re going to be playing too and they\u2019re going to find something about your music they\u2019ll really love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to watching Altan perform, they\u2019re an amazing Irish traditional band and we normally get the chance to take in some performances when we\u2019re not on stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having started singing as a seven-year-old and learning the guitar and piano music has always been a passion of McKenna\u2019s, and he said that he, alongside his band mates, draws inspiration from all types of music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all listen to and are inspired by all types of genres, especially now with music changing so much, everything around you inspires you in some way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur sound is definitely modern mixed with the past.
