THE Albanese Government has confirmed funding for a project to improve the health of the Karaaf wetlands in Torquay North.<\/p>\n
The $1.9 million in funding, pledged ahead of the 2022 federal election, will help protect the wetlands from the impacts of stormwater by reducing and divert high volumes of freshwater flowing into the wetlands, protecting fragile and threatened coastal saltmarsh plant.<\/p>\n
The Karaaf Wetlands project will be delivered by the Surf Coast Shire.<\/p>\n
Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek and Corangamite Labor federal member Libby Coker met with supporters of the Karaaf wetlands on Monday this week to confirm the funding.<\/p>\n
“We want to repair damage to our environment and leave nature better off for our kids and grandkids,” Ms Plibersek said.<\/p>\n
“That’s why we’re investing $200 million in projects to revitalise our urban rivers and creeks.<\/p>\n
“We want to support the groups on the ground in their community working to better protect and restore their local environment.”<\/p>\n
Ms Coker said the funding was crucial to the future survival and restoration of the wetlands.<\/p>\n
“I would like to thank the community who recognised the need for action to restore the Karaaf Wetlands, and for their continued advocacy.<\/p>\n
