THE Surf Coast Shire Council is searching for artists, community groups, and small business owners interested in creating art in public space as part of its returning SHED Talk series.<\/p>\n

The Shire, in partnership with local artists Grant Finck and Cinnamon Stephens, and Wadawurrung mural artist Jenna Oldaker, will host its first SHED Talk of 2024, named Navigating Public Art Commissions on Saturday, March 16.<\/p>\n

The three artists will encompass how they got into public art and the different paths aspiring or professional artists can take in earning commissions of their own.<\/p>\n

“Navigating the complex world of art in public spaces is always easier when talking to someone who has successfully done this before”, Surf Coast Shire councillor Gary Allen said.<\/p>\n

“This session is a chance to talk to established artists about all the tricks and tips they have learnt through their experience creating public art.”<\/p>\n

The session will also look at expression of interest processes, permits and navigating the language of public art procurement.<\/p>\n

“The Surf Coast arts community has achieved some wonderful public art works within the shire and further afield,” Cr Allen said.<\/p>\n

“We are very lucky to have Grant, Cinnamon and Jenna share their knowledge and expertise working with community to realise their vision and with local government processes, which can initially seem somewhat overwhelming for early career artists.”<\/p>\n

The first SHED Talk will be facilitated by Kim Biggs, Coordinator, Surf Coast Arts and Creative Economy Team, and guest will be able to talk to the Shire’s community projects officer Nicky Angus, and arts development officer Harriet Gaffney.<\/p>\n

The session will run from 10am-1pm at Grant’s Shed at Firetail Studios, 450 Wormbete Station Road, Gherang \u2013 250 metres down Tanners Road from Wormbete Station Road.<\/p>\n
