{"id":130803,"date":"2024-03-25T04:00:11","date_gmt":"2024-03-24T17:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=130803"},"modified":"2024-03-22T13:05:41","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T02:05:41","slug":"torquay-good-friday-appeal-efforts-ramping-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/torquay-good-friday-appeal-efforts-ramping-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay Good Friday Appeal efforts ramping up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORQUAY&#8217;S fundraising for this year\u2019s Good Friday Appeal is well under way with at least three local businesses chipping in for the town\u2019s ambitious 2024 target.<\/p>\n<p>Local Good Friday Appeal coordinator and Torquay Lions Club member Peter McMahon has been hard at work rallying local businesses to get behind the club\u2019s fundraising mission to raise $80,000 this year to the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs well as wonderful individuals raising funds for the Good Friday Appeal, we now have our local business community hopping in to help,\u201d Mr McMahon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTorquay RSL and Lions Club members have been on the job for the past few months chasing dollars for this year\u2019s Royal Children\u2019s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now, Torquay businesses have chipped in to help as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the businesses raising funds for this year\u2019s appeal are Gilbert Street\u2019s Dusty\u2019s Bulk Foods, who will aim to raise $5,000 before March 29 through self-run raffles in store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Good Friday Appeal is a cause close to so many people and we are determined to help, with the support of locals in Torquay,\u201d business co-owner Lisa Newton said.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay North business LA Movement expects to raise in the vicinity of $1,000 through an organised athletic competition, while McCartney Real Estate will be out in the community tin-rattling to help at Torquay\u2019s highway collection point.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 426px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/LucyatMcCartneys_73206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">McCartney Real Estate sales and marketing coordinator Lucy Blakwood joined by Torquay Lion Ross Yapp (left) and local appeal coordinator Peter McMahon (right). Photos: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Good Friday Appeal will divert funding towards five of Victoria\u2019s regional health services, including locally at Geelong\u2019s Barwon Health.<\/p>\n<p>Mr McMahon says this new approach by the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital should provide more incentive for locals to donate this Good Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want every child and family to receive the best possible care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past few years, our total fundraising has increased for the Good Friday Appeal each year and reached more than $70,000 last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, we have volunteer collectors from Deakin University, Torquay Lions Club, the CFA, and Torquay RSL.
