AS THE days get shorter and colder, VicRoads is urging motorists to think safety this winter.<\/p>\n
In south western Victoria, the colder weather typically brings with it more wet, foggy and windy conditions which can lead to poor visibility and slippery road surfaces.<\/p>\n
VicRoads regional director (south west) Mark Koliba said everyone could improve safety on the road network this winter by slowing down and exercising care and caution.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis time of year we usually see much more rain across the region, which not only affects visibility but can also make it harder to judge where you are on the road in relation to other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.<\/p>\n
\u201cWet weather should be a prompt for all drivers to slow down on our roads and to leave greater distances between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said slowing down and driving to the conditions was also advisable in times of heavy fog or strong winds.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn foggy conditions, drivers should always have their headlights on low beam, avoid overtaking and never drive at a speed that forces you to guess what\u2019s in front of you.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you have to be on the road when strong winds are forecast, slowing down and being mindful of the conditions of the road is the best way to stay safe on the network. If you see any hazards on our roads, please report it by phoning 13 11 70.\u201d<\/p>\n
Drivers are also reminded to keep their vehicle roadworthy \u2013 in particular checking tyres, windscreen wipers and brake lights on a regular basis.<\/p>\n
