THE Surf Coast Shire is sharing a treasure trove of historical photos and stories as it bids farewell to the management of Bells Beach\/Djarrak.<\/p>\n

Known by its traditional name Djarrak, meaning ‘bended arm’\u2014a reference to the unique cliff shapes that encircle the area\u2014Bells Beach is among several parcels of land soon to be managed by the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority, which oversees the land and sea along the Great Ocean Road.<\/p>\n

The area has a profound history, having been cared for by the Wadawurrung People, the traditional custodians, for over 65,000 years before the council’s stewardship began in 1971.<\/p>\n

These historical insights, shared on the council’s social media platforms, capture moments from clifftop gatherings to the early days of iconic surfing events like the Rip Curl Pro, initially called the Surfboard Rally in 1961.<\/p>\n

Surf Coast Shire Councillor Mike Bodsworth commented on the transition’s significance.<\/p>\n

“Bells Beach\/Djarrak is a special place not just for the surfing community but for all the community of the Surf Coast. It has been great to see Djarrak shine recently during the Rip Curl Pro,” Cr Bodsworth said.<\/p>\n

“Looking back through the years and these photos, has reminded me about how far we have come since 1971.<\/p>\n

“There has been such significant involvement from the community and groups like Surfers Appreciating the Natural Environment (SANE).<\/p>\n

“It has been great to see the progress and I know the Authority will continue to look after it,” he said.<\/p>\n

The management and upkeep of the Reserve have been guided by the Bells Beach Surfing Recreation Reserve Coastal and Marine Management Plan 2015-25.<\/p>\n

The Authority is set to assume responsibility on July 1 and will develop a new plan involving extensive consultations with the community, stakeholders, and Traditional Owners to ensure the reserve’s values are preserved and enhanced.<\/p>\n
