WORKS to remove buildings damaged by a recent fire in Torquay’s Gilbert Street started on Monday this week.<\/p>\n
While Gilbert Street remains open to traffic, the footpath on the south side is closed until the demolition is complete.<\/p>\n
A Surf Coast Shire traffic controller is on-site to assist pedestrians needing to cross the street during this period.<\/p>\n
The demolition, expected to conclude this weekend, follows a devastating fire late on April 14 that ravaged several businesses, including Italo’s Wood Fired Pizza and McCartney Real Estate.<\/p>\n
The fire, which required extensive efforts from both Torquay and Geelong firefighters, was brought under control in the early hours of the morning on April 15.<\/p>\n
Emergency services, including 13 CFA vehicles and a Fire Rescue Victoria aerial crew, worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading further, saving the IGA.<\/p>\n
Despite the significant damage, some businesses, including The Torquay Larder and Strumpet, continue to operate from alternative locations.<\/p>\n
The Torquay Larder is presently trading from Fishos at 36 The Esplanade, and Strumpet from their own store.<\/p>\n
The shire stated community support for these businesses remains crucial during their recovery.<\/p>\n
