RETIRED solicitor John Voyage has been appointed as Victoria\u2019s new Road Safety Camera Commissioner.
\nThe commissioner provides independent of oversight Victoria\u2019s camera network, including red-light, mobile and fixed cameras, to ensure that the system is accurate and contributes to safer roads. One of the functions of the role is to carry out annual reviews and assessments of the information made available to the public by the Department of Justice, and the commissioner also gives Victorian motorists an alternate avenue for complaints and quality assurance. Mr Voyage was part of the Law Institute of Victoria\u2019s Road Safety Committee for many years, chaired the Law Institute\u2019s Transport Accident Committee for 20 years, and has contributed to a number of Victorian Parliamentary Road Safety Committee inquiries during his legal career of more than 30 years.
\nHe holds a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws from Monash University and was a partner at Maurice Blackburn from 1990 until 2014.
\nThe appointment follows the retirement of Gordon Lewis, Victoria\u2019s first Road Safety Camera Commissioner, in February.
\nThe state government announced Mr Voyage\u2019s appointment on his first day in the job, on April 6.
