{"id":137748,"date":"2024-06-26T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=137748"},"modified":"2024-06-20T10:09:33","modified_gmt":"2024-06-20T00:09:33","slug":"membership-numbers-soar-over-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/membership-numbers-soar-over-bridge\/","title":{"rendered":"Membership numbers soar over bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORQUAY Bridge Club&#8217;s membership numbers have quadrupled since the pandemic, with more and more locals choosing to get &#8220;intellectually active.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The social group now boost over 100 members and affiliates, up from less than 20 members in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Members currently gather twice a week at Oak Tree Place (Torquay Uniting Church) to play both face to face and computerised versions of the trick-taking card game.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/IMG_9174_46812-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lyn McFarlane, Lydia Erving, Irena Karpala and Kym Fraser.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Torquay Bridge Club president Kym Fraser said the group has been a revelation over the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I do believe we are a very friendly and welcoming club who really embrace everyone of different expertise.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The great thing about bridge is you can play it socially at a beginner sort of level, or you can spend the rest of your life improving your bridge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/IMG_9161_46787-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Janet Flitton, Sue Parratt, Pam Smigowski and Cecily Thomas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got members who do it socially and some who are very competitive. It&#8217;s a great mix!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully it continues to grow and grow in what is a great venue at Oak Tree Place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Fraser said the skyrocketing membership numbers is partly due to the club&#8217;s expanded social offering.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have been hosting car rallies with cryptic bridge quizzes, and special parties on many dates like Melbourne Cup, Christmas in July and Christmas.
