{"id":138453,"date":"2024-07-03T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=138453"},"modified":"2024-06-27T12:40:46","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T02:40:46","slug":"immersed-in-first-nations-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/immersed-in-first-nations-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Immersed in First Nations culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GRADE 6 students from Torquay College have recently embarked on an Indigenous immersion experience.<\/p>\n<p>During the six-day immersion, 22 students travelled to the Murray River and the Lake Mungo National Park, learning all about how First Nations people live.<\/p>\n<p>The group visited a number of countries along the Murray River, where they took part in activities including conservation fishing, charcoal art, dances, storytelling and more. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From a child&#8217;s point of view, they&#8217;re gaining knowledge directly from the elders. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The process of choosing which students would go on the immersion started in October last year.<\/p>\n<p>Those interested were interviewed and completed a questionnaire, ensuring those who took part were respectful, hands on and wanted to be on country.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Vaught said the students they took on the trip blew her mind.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just watched them, they just hung on every word the First Nations people were talking to them and it was amazing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/bushknowledgewalks_15711.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The students visited a number of countries along the Murray River. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was just the most beautiful experience for them all to be a part of something so special.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The role of an immersion is to learn new knowledge and that knowledge is then to be passed on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The idea to take the students on the immersion came from the school&#8217;s dedication in supporting First Nations people.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Vaught, who has a strong passion for learning about First Nations people, led the students through the experience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve always had an interest in First Nations people, the way they live and the respect they deserve for being in this space way before us,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Vaught teaches STEM through the eyes of first scientists, learning and celebrating how technology has progressed.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first year Torquay College has run the immersion, with plans to continue the experience into the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GRADE 6 students from Torquay College have recently embarked on an Indigenous immersion experience.
