THE Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) will begin construction on a new access point for walkers at Apollo Bay’s Point Bunbury for improved safety reasons.<\/p>\n

Bollards will also be installed on the outer lanes of the route across a section of the golf course, meanwhile safety netting and wayfinding signage will also be included in other areas.<\/p>\n

The new route begins from the Trafalgar Street car park and protects environmental and cultural values while avoiding exacerbating erosion.<\/p>\n

“Maintaining an access point to Point Bunbury was a very strong desire of the community,” acting GORCAPA chief executive officer Cath Olive said.<\/p>\n

“This project delivers that great experience, while avoiding the safety, environmental and cultural heritage risks that were found at Point Bunbury.”<\/p>\n

The Apollo Bay community has requested public safety works for Point Bunbury since last year with GORCAPA working closely with the Apollo Bay Golf Club Board and Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation on the project.<\/p>\n

The new access point section replaces an informal walking track, which was closed, to support the primary dune system, preserve habitat for local wildlife, and protect cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

The closed section will remain protected to allow natural regeneration, to support the stabilisation of the primary dune, previously impacted by erosion.<\/p>\n

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the month.<\/p>\n
