AN INTERACTIVE water safety sign has been installed at the Lorne Visitor Information Centre, providing real-time multilingual information and warnings.<\/p>\n
The installation features an electronic touchscreen offering users updates on weather conditions, hazards, and information about lifesaver patrols.<\/p>\n
Life Saving Victoria manager Dr Hannah Calverley said the installation would enhance water safety in Lorne.<\/p>\n
“We have very high hopes for a positive impact on water safety in the region.<\/p>\n
“This important project underscores our commitment to protecting the community and its visitors and ensuring that everyone can enjoy our beautiful coastal areas safely. We believe it will serve as a model for other regions to follow.”<\/p>\n
The Royal Life Saving Summer Drowning Toll recorded 99 drowning deaths across Australia between December 1, 2023 and February 29 this year.<\/p>\n
This was a 10 per cent increase on the 90 drowning deaths recorded the pervious summer and 5 per cent increase on the five-year average of 94 drowning deaths.<\/p>\n
The sign, currently being trialled in Lorne, will be evaluated for potential use across Victoria.<\/p>\n
Locals and visitors are encouraged to visit the Lorne Visitor Information Centre to see the new electronic signage in action.<\/p>\n
The sign is capable of providing information in multiple languages, ensuring all visitors can access vital safety information.<\/p>\n
At the moment, it includes translations in Simplified Chinese and English, with the potential for additional languages based on visitor needs.<\/p>\n
This project is a collaboration between Life Saving Victoria and Surf Life Saving Australia, funded through the Blackspot Program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
