AUSTRALIA’S first mobile veterinary service is making waves across the region by bringing state-of-the-art CT scanning technology directly to animals.<\/p>\n
This eliminates the need for pet owners to travel to distant and\u00a0often more\u00a0expensive facilities.<\/p>\n
Founder\u00a0of Insight Mobile Veterinary Diagnostics and Australia’s first mobile veterinary CT scanner\u00a0Dr Clint Yudelman\u00a0said the idea behind the mobile service is to provide high-quality veterinary care while reducing the stress and inconvenience for both pets and their owners.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe aim is to take the CT scanner to the animal rather than having the owner and the animal drive to a traditional, inconvenient, and\u00a0often more\u00a0expensive\u00a0referral\u00a0centre,\u201d\u00a0Dr Yudelman\u00a0said.<\/p>\n
Dr Yudelman said that the service primarily caters to dogs and cats, but it can also accommodate other small animals.<\/p>\n
\u201cTypically, it\u2019s just dogs and cats, but we\u2019ve scanned rabbits and even some small exotic animals from the zoo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve done a monkeys\u00a0cotton top tamarins,\u00a0leadbeater\u00a0possums, and other small animals.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBasically, any animal that\u2019s small enough to fit in the scanner can be accommodated.\u201d<\/p>\n
The process involves sedating\u00a0or anaesthetising\u00a0the animals to ensure they remain still during the scan.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey generally undergo general anaesthesia to keep them calm and still while we perform the scan,\u201d Dr Yudelman said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis allows us to get the best possible images for diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n
The mobile CT scanner is used to diagnose a variety of conditions, from broken bones and fractures to more complex issues like pneumonia and tumours.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe look for things like broken bones, pneumonia, foreign objects inside the body, and unfortunately, tumours as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy bringing the CT scanner to the animal, we make it easier for pet owners and reduce the stress on the animals.\u201d<\/p>\n
