WORK to install traffic lights at the intersection of Bristol Road and the Surf Coast Highway to improve safety and traffic flow will begin soon.<\/p>\n

The intersection upgrade will result in improvements for both pedestrians and road users.<\/p>\n

Intersection upgrades will include:<\/p>\n

Traffic able to turn right as well as left from Bristol Road onto the Surf Coast Highway<\/p>\n

New signalised pedestrian crossings on both Bristol Road and the highway, making it safer for people to cross<\/p>\n

Traffic from the intersection will be able to enter the service road; service road traffic will need to use the Zeally Bay Road intersection to enter the highway, and A new footpath will be constructed on the western side of the highway.<\/p>\n

Shire mayor Liz Pattison said the intersection upgrade and traffic lights will make it safer for all road users.<\/p>\n

“We have heard the community’s reluctance for more traffic lights in Torquay, but as the town grows and gets busier, safe crossing points and safe intersections for all road users are needed along Surf Coast Highway,” Cr Pattison said.<\/p>\n

“Upgrading this intersection will also mean all those driving home from the supermarket and shops will be able to turn right out of Bristol Road on to the highway.”<\/p>\n

Traffic management will be on site as road closures take place during the works.<\/p>\n

The Surf Coast Highway southbound will have a single lane closure for about six weeks in August and September, while Bristol Road will be closed from the highway to Payne Street for about two weeks in September.<\/p>\n

The Surf Coast Highway northbound will be completely closed for about six weeks in October and November, during which northbound traffic will be guided through the works area on the southbound carriageway.<\/p>\n

Changes were made to the upgrade plans following community engagement in 2021, and have included adding one-way access from the intersection to the service road.<\/p>\n

The project is part of the Torquay Jan Juc Development Contribution Plan, helping cater for recent and future growth.<\/p>\n
