{"id":142040,"date":"2024-08-12T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-11T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=142040"},"modified":"2024-08-14T10:05:28","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T00:05:28","slug":"lorne-get-bushfire-readiness-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/lorne-get-bushfire-readiness-boost\/","title":{"rendered":"Lorne get bushfire readiness boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LORNE P-12 College has received a huge &#8220;bushfire readiness&#8221; boost by receiving fire safety funding from the state government.<\/p>\n<p>More than 300 schools statewide will share in more than $8.4 million to carry out essential maintenance work through the Bushfire Preparedness (Vegetation) Program (BPVP).<\/p>\n<p>Lorne P-12 College will use the funding to mitigate the risk of harm to the school&#8217;s community and buildings in the event of a bushfire.<\/p>\n<p>Vice-principal Michael Stone welcomed the state government funding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are really thankful and grateful for the support which in turn makes sure we have a safe environment for students, teachers and the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The funding allows us to work with local groups, the Lorne CFA and the BPVP several times a year to make sure we are abiding by all regulations and fire safety methods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This funding is integral to us being fire ready.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a locality, Lorne is one the highest risk fire areas in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>To combat the risk, the P-12 College has built an indoor fire shelter at the school.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have worked hard with key stakeholders to have the shelter completely audited,&#8221; Mr Stone said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They have made sure the proximity from plants and trees is appropriate and it has enough food and water to sustain people for a long period of time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Due to us being located with the Otway&#8217;s right at our back, it is just absolutely vital everything is in place and well prepared.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_142042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142042\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-142042 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0376_57075.jpg?_t=1723095319\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0376_57075.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0376_57075-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0376_57075-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0376_57075-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0376_57075-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-142042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lorne P-12 College has a fire shelter which can be utilised by the local community.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Education Ben Carroll said the government was proud to be providing grants to slash vegetation growth and reduce bushfire risk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know how devastating bushfires are and just how long-lasting their impacts can be, and that&#8217;s why we&#8217;re continuing to support schools to be as fire ready as possible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These grants will help more than 330 schools at risk, to protect their classrooms and facilities in the event of a bushfire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other local schools on the Bushfire at Risk Register (BARR) eligible for funding include Bellbrae Primary School, Anglesea Primary School, Aireys Inlet Primary School, amongst others.<\/p>\n<p>The Fire Danger Period may be declared as early as October by the Country Fire Authority.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LORNE P-12 College has received a huge &#8220;bushfire readiness&#8221; boost by receiving fire safety funding from the state government.
