	{"id":142378,"date":"2024-08-16T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-15T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=142378"},"modified":"2024-08-14T15:01:09","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T05:01:09","slug":"run-hops-into-new-hands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/run-hops-into-new-hands\/","title":{"rendered":"Run hops into new hands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Anglesea Roo Run will hop into new hands in 2024, with a local professional athlete set to take on a leading role.<\/p>\n<p>Anglesea resident and champion long distance runner Julian Spence will spearhead the fundraising initiative into its 11th year, following event organiser Mick Collins stepping down due to work commitments.<\/p>\n<p>The Roo Run offers both elite and recreational athletes a fun and inclusive family-friendly running event on the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>Competitors compete in a 4km, 8km, and 1.5km Grommet Gallop each December on the beaches, riverbanks and clifftops of Anglesea.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Spence, who has been an event ambassador for close to 10 years, said he was honoured to be taking the run forward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s super exciting to be working alongside the Anglesea Motor Yacht Club, the community and Mick in preparations for 2024,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been involved in many events during my career, but nothing is as community-run as the Roo Run.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s got a great formula and is continuing to grow every year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We certainly won&#8217;t be making any big changes to it, but rather adding a bit of our running and event experience to the fantastic event it already is.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Outgoing event lead Mick Collins said he was rapt to be bringing in some &#8220;fresh blood&#8221; for 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With my work commitments, it&#8217;s just getting harder and harder to give it the energy it needs, so it&#8217;s awesome to bring in someone with such a great passion for running like Julian,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0571_69269.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julian Spence has been an ambassador for the Roo Run for over ten years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were at risk of potentially losing it as an event, but to Julian&#8217;s credit, he put his hand up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just such an amazing event for tourists and community members alike.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We at the Anglesea Motor Yacht Club look forward to seeing where it goes and will back Julian all the way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The committee plans to open entries earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There just seems to be this running boom that seems to be sweeping over the country at the moment,&#8221; Mr Spence said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Melbourne marathon, Geelong marathon, Great Ocean Road marathon and many more have all been selling out well before the event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want runners to miss out on the Roo Run, so opening things earlier will make it easier for athletes and us as organisers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The run will again be supported by local businesses including Mr Spence&#8217;s company The Running Company Geelong, which is about to open a store in Torquay.
