{"id":143731,"date":"2024-08-27T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=143731"},"modified":"2024-08-23T11:54:43","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T01:54:43","slug":"diamonds-train-in-torquay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/diamonds-train-in-torquay\/","title":{"rendered":"Diamonds train in Torquay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE world&#8217;s top netball team, the Australian Diamonds, called the Surf Coast home last week for its annual culture and training camp.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 players, officials and trainers from the national squad made the journey down to Torquay this week for the five-day event.<\/p>\n<p>The camp, which wrapped up last Friday at Wurdi Baierr Stadium, featured skills, conditioning and culture and wellbeing workshops.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0621_26015.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It was all smiles in Torquay for star shooter Donnell Wallam.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It marked the first time the team has trained together since the squad was announced in June.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Liz Watson, vice-captain Paige Hadle and mid-courter Kate Moloney were among 15 returning athletes from a successful 2023 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Ash Ervin (Sunshine Coast Lightning), Georgie Horjus (Adelaide Thunderbirds) and Hannah Mundy (Melbourne Vixens) featured for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Former Drysdale junior netballer Emily Mannix (Melbourne Vixens) and Lucy Austin (Adelaide Thunderbirds) also participated in the camp as the two invitee athletes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0635_26074.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The team playing a game of volleyball to warm up.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking exclusively to the Surf Coast Times during the week, Diamonds head coach Stacey Marinkovich said the team was thrilled to spend some time down in Torquay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s quite a strong connection to the area, particularly when you talk to players about friends, family and holidays they&#8217;ve spent here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I personally hadn&#8217;t spent much time here but am loving it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to make sure it felt like a camp and to be outside of the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When the players come together, you want to make it an experience, and what better place to do that than Torquay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Seven-year Diamonds player Kate Moloney agreed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0647_26056.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mid-courter Kate Moloney leaning in for a handball during a warm-up drill.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s nice to get down here, get to a different location and have the girls all together,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being from Victoria, I&#8217;ve been here a few times. It&#8217;s just a beautiful place to be here in Torquay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Moloney said the camp was a great launchpad for the Diamonds mission of shooting for gold at the Sydney 2027 Netball World Cup.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0661_26044.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Players took part in skills, conditioning and wellbeing workshops.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We start a new cycle and it&#8217;s about maintaining the number one status in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got the Commonwealth Games and World Cup to come, and there&#8217;s plenty of excitement to build for those events.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a recognition of the foundation that&#8217;s already there and what we are about to build upon and the exciting path ahead,&#8221; Marinkovich added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0666_26013.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Diamonds will be looking to hold world number one status into the 2027 Sydney World Cup.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s been such a long-sustained success with the Diamonds, and we want to be able to win and put our sport at the forefront in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s lots of different steps to get there, but I&#8217;m excited about the group we&#8217;ve got and the how we can take the next steps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Diamonds will start their competitive season in a three-test series against the England Roses in Adelaide on September 19.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE world&#8217;s top netball team, the Australian Diamonds, called the Surf Coast home last week for its annual culture and training camp.
