{"id":145033,"date":"2024-09-06T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=145033"},"modified":"2024-09-09T08:27:41","modified_gmt":"2024-09-08T22:27:41","slug":"bells-fires-for-hells-djarrak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/bells-fires-for-hells-djarrak\/","title":{"rendered":"Bells fires for Hells Djarrak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELLS Beach\/Djarrak was at its best over the weekend for Torquay Boardriders multi-club invitational surfing event Hells Djarrak.<\/p>\n<p>More than 60 of the state&#8217;s top surfers were given the opportunity to surf near-perfect four-to-six feet waves in the premiere event.<\/p>\n<p>Competition was described as being at &#8220;full throttle&#8221; with plenty of surfers securing some big heat scores and generating momentum throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>However, eventual winners Nalu Belyea (Open), Ellie Harrison (Women) and Ava Holland (Juniors) stood out from the crowd.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/HellsDjarrak310824-1_74610.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"304\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ellie Harrison low-lining a big one at Bells. Photos: RADICALXPOSURE\/ANDY CORNER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The up-and-coming trio dominated their respective finals, all scoring in the good to excellent range on their two highest scoring rides.<\/p>\n<p>Belyea pulled through a Bells bowl barrel to score his first ever major event win, while Harrison had her trademark power carve down to a tee on the big slopping Bells Beach walls.<\/p>\n<p>For their efforts, the Belyea and Harrison scored $1,000 winners, a prestigious Hells Djarrak jacket and got to lift the illustrious Bunjil trophy.<\/p>\n<p>The trophy was carved by Surf Coast artist Raph Buttonshaw and depicts the creator spirit, the eagle Bunjil, who is the protector of Bells Beach\/Djarrak.<\/p>\n<p>Willis Droomer, Todd Rosewall and Spencer Kay made the finals in the open division, while Ava Holland, Sarsha Pancic and Juliet Muscroft rounded out the women&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/HellsDjarrak310824-9_74628.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"304\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Willis Droomer putting his board on rail.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Torquay Boardriders president Cahill Bell-Warren said the event would go down as one of the best yet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was very good honest community day of surfing. Our members from 12 year old girls through to 60 year old men just ripped it up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The performances from crew from other clubs too was just incredible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bunjil definitely organised that swell for us.
