REGISTRATIONS are now open for the Torquay SLSC Nippers program ahead of its launch this October.<\/p>\n

The program is open to children aged five to 13 and aims to provide a pathway for future lifesavers through life saving skills development and surf sports.<\/p>\n

Participants will develop surf skills like wading, swimming, surf swimming, board paddling and beach flags.<\/p>\n

They will also learn beach safety, and how to stay safe by the water.<\/p>\n

Torquay SLSC president Matt Carmichael said the club was expecting more than 550 Nippers in the 2024-25 season.<\/p>\n

“We are looking forward to a bumper season, with memberships really starting to boom now the football season is over.<\/p>\n

“We’ve got some great things planned both on and off the beach.<\/p>\n

“Jacinta Winter has taken reins of the Nipper program and is going great guns, and we’ve also appointed a new Nippers welfare officer who will help us work with integrating more children with diverse needs into our programs.<\/p>\n

“Everyone is welcome to attend any of our sessions. We can’t wait to see you all on the beach.”<\/p>\n

Ms Winter echoed his sentiment and said she looked forward to leading the program.<\/p>\n

“We are really excited for it to start, particularly after a bumper recent season.<\/p>\n

“Last year we were at about 550 Nippers, with 300 or more on the beach at one time.<\/p>\n

“We invite families new and old to be part of season 2024-25.”<\/p>\n

The program will feature two major components: the summer holiday program and the junior aquatic surf sports.<\/p>\n

Junior aquatic surf sports training will begin on October 20.<\/p>\n

Sessions will be held on Sunday mornings from 9am to 10.30am and Wednesday afternoons from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.<\/p>\n

The Lorne Nipper Training Champ is tentatively booked for November 15 to November 17. All are welcome.<\/p>\n

Summer holiday program participants will begin their Nippers program on December 27.<\/p>\n

The Torquay SLSC will also hold a preliminary swim assessment the week before the Nippers program starts.<\/p>\n
