{"id":146561,"date":"2024-09-27T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-26T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=146561"},"modified":"2024-09-26T11:28:37","modified_gmt":"2024-09-26T01:28:37","slug":"golf-event-raises-18k-to-fight-leukaemia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/golf-event-raises-18k-to-fight-leukaemia\/","title":{"rendered":"Golf event raises $18k to fight leukaemia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Sands Torquay has hosted another successful #DoingItForJarrod day, with the golfing day raisiing more than $18,000 for the cause.<\/p>\n<p>The annual event, first held in 2019, honours the memory of Torquay golfer Jarrod Lyle and raises money for children&#8217;s cancer charity Challenge, of which Lyle was a long-time ambassador.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/B07K8128-BradJohnst_79947.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former AFL player Brad Johnson tees off at the 1st hole.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lyle died on August 8, 2018, about a week after deciding to stop treatment for cancer (the third time he had battled the disease) and enter palliative care.<\/p>\n<p>Challenge and the Australian golf industry invited every golf club in Australia to take part in the inaugural #DoingItForJarrod event in 2019 &#8211; to mark one year since Lyle&#8217;s passing &#8211; and many other clubs, including The Sands Torquay, have held golf days each year since then to raise funds, which also includes sales of the distinctive yellow Leuk the Duck merchandise.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The #DoingItForJarrod day was a huge success.
