{"id":146797,"date":"2024-09-26T09:24:28","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T23:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=146797"},"modified":"2024-09-26T10:00:29","modified_gmt":"2024-09-26T00:00:29","slug":"lorne-duo-receive-prestigious-community-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/lorne-duo-receive-prestigious-community-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Lorne duo receive prestigious community award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COMMITTED Lorne residents Clive and Lesley Goldsworthy have been recognised for their efforts in the community, announced as the latest recipients of the prestigious Doug and Mary Stirling Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The pair were congratulated at a special ceremony at Stribling Reserve on Friday last week in front of more than 140 people including friends, family and other community representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Goldsworthy said he and his wife were honoured to receive the award.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were quite humbled by the award, but then as some people said, we&#8217;ve just got to look back at our track record the past 12 years and have said we deserve it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a great day, having everyone there, and in my acceptance speech I noted it wasn&#8217;t just the volunteering we did that made Lorne a great place, there are so many others that volunteer as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s what makes Lorne such a great place, people are always willing to get together and help each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The cup is awarded every two years, recognising outstanding community service.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 545px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/untitled65of151_53924.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"364\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Surf Coast Shire Lorne Ward councillor Gary Allen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is named after the initial recipients of the award, Doug and Mary Stirling.<\/p>\n<p>Doug, one of Lorne&#8217;s oldest residents at 102 years old, met with Clive and Lesley to congratulate them on receiving the award.<\/p>\n<p>As part of their selection, the Committee for Lorne noted the impact of Clive and Lesley in sectors such as education, community, business, culture and the arts, health, environment and sport.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 577px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/untitled80of151_53983.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"577\" height=\"385\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Goldsworthys with the Doug and Mary Stirling Cup at last week&#8217;s ceremony. Photos: LEON WALKER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Goldsworthy, who moved to Lorne permanently in 2010, said he is very lucky to be a part of the Lorne community and will continue to look for new ways to help the town alongside his wife.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re incredibly lucky to be here, we feel extremely privileged to have live here for so long.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was lovely speaking to Doug, too; he has an incredible mind and attitude on so many things, he&#8217;s such a character and no one other Lorne residents than he and Mary should have their names attached to the award.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/untitled43of151_53948.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Committee for Lorne chairman John Higgins presenting the Doug and Mary Stirling Cup.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clive and Lesley&#8217;s accomplishments locally are wide-ranging.<\/p>\n<p>Clive served as a councillor in the Lorne Ward in the Surf Coast Shire for eight years, was president of the Lorne Country Club for a decade and was treasurer of the Lorne Football Netball Club for 11 years.<\/p>\n<p>Lesley also helped revitalise and save Lorne Seniors Citizens (now Lorne Community Connect), instigated the Snappers group at the LAAC and has been a major advocate in welcoming new residents.<\/p>\n<p>The Goldsworthys are the third couple presented jointly with the cup out of the six awarded to date.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COMMITTED Lorne residents Clive and Lesley Goldsworthy have been recognised for their efforts in the community, announced as the latest recipients of the prestigious Doug and Mary Stirling Cup.
