{"id":14731,"date":"2018-07-18T09:37:08","date_gmt":"2018-07-17T23:37:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=14731"},"modified":"2018-07-20T11:18:29","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T01:18:29","slug":"beware-of-nbn-scammers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/beware-of-nbn-scammers\/","title":{"rendered":"Beware of NBN scammers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NBN Co is alerting the community to be aware of scammers asking for personal information and financial details.<\/p>\n<p>Scammers are increasingly taking the opportunity to impersonate NBN Co and take advantage of consumers, including those living in retirement villages.<\/p>\n<p>NBN Co chief security officer Darren Kane said his company would never make unsolicited calls or doorknock to sell broadband services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNBN Co may make calls to individuals registered on our medical alarm or fire and lift registers but will never request payment or bank account details during these calls. NBN Co also does not request payment in relation to matters relating to medical alarms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNBN Co is the company building and operating Australia\u2019s wholesale broadband network, and as a wholesale-only company we do not sell broadband packages directly to consumers. There are times when NBN Co may contact you directly as part of the network rollout, but never to request payment for services over the NBN network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtect your personal information by being on guard, verify who are you are talking to and do not give your personal details or bank account details to an unsolicited caller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NBN Co advises the following steps be taken to help protect yourself from scammers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not share your bank or personal details with an unsolicited caller or with those who door knock claiming to be from NBN Co and trying to sell you an NBN service or seek payment for related services<\/li>\n<li>If you think you have been a victim immediately report the scam to your bank or financial institution, and the police<\/li>\n<li>If you have any questions about how these types of scams relate to you or would like further assistance, phone IDCARE on 1300 432 273, and<\/li>\n<li>To protect others, report scams to the ACCC online at scamwatch.gov.au\/report-a-scam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NBN Co is alerting the community to be aware of scammers asking for personal information and financial details.
