	{"id":149576,"date":"2024-11-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-10T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=149576"},"modified":"2024-11-07T11:30:06","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T00:30:06","slug":"watch-out-for-just-hatched-hoodies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/watch-out-for-just-hatched-hoodies\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch out for just-hatched hoodies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VOLUNTEER birdwatchers and rangers from the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority are urging community members to follow safety precautions to protect hooded plovers nesting on beaches at Lorne, Apollo Bay and Anglesea.<\/p>\n<p>Rangers say six of the &#8220;hoodie&#8221; chicks have hatched from two nests on the beach at Mounts Bay, between the Barham River and Ocean Park Drive, in Apollo Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Signage has been installed to inform the community and a temporary exclusion zone was established around the nesting sites ahead of the Melbourne Cup long weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/MG_9251_18053.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The hoodie chicks have a survival rate of 2 per cent.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A temporary exclusion zone will also be set up at Lorne, where another Hooded Plover nest was expected to hatch this week.<\/p>\n<p>Dogs are not permitted within the exclusion zone at any time, however, people are free to pass through at the water&#8217;s edge.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, two out of three hooded plovers that hatched recently at Point Roadknight in Anglesea have survived and are now able to fly (fledged).<\/p>\n<p>To give the hoodies the best chance of survival, the authority is asking community members to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Give the area a wide berth. Please walk your dog at another beach and use the area outside the exclusion zone to enjoy our beaches, and<\/li>\n<li>Please be vigilant in the area.
