VICTORIA Police is inviting everyone to join them at the Surf Coast All Abilities Community Day, to be held next week.<\/p>\n
The event, to be held at Elephant Walk in Torquay, is a way for police and people with disability to come together in a safe and inclusive environment.
\nIt is aimed at protecting and enforcing the rights of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n
The event also aims to humanise police members, breaking down barriers for many people with a disability, who might have been fearful of police in the past.<\/p>\n
Attractions will include stalls from genU and other service providers, a demonstration by VICSES, and a possible appearance by Victoria Police’s Air Wing.<\/p>\n
A Victoria Police spokesperson said Victoria Police was proud to be involved in the event and hoped it increases the community\u2019s awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n
The event is supported by Commonwealth Bank.<\/p>\n
Victoria Police recently introduced Disability Liaison Officers (DLOs) to police stations across the state.<\/p>\n
The DLOs are police officers who serve as contact points for the disability community, and are trained to understand the issues relevant to the disability community.<\/p>\n
DLOs provide advice on personal safety and protection, help with reporting crime to police, and support in navigating police services.<\/p>\n
They also work with their local disability community to help build stronger connections and support their colleagues to better engage with and understand issues relevant to the disability community.<\/p>\n
The Surf Coast All Abilities Community Day will be held at Elephant Walk, The Esplanade, Torquay on November 24 from 10am until 1pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
