{"id":151698,"date":"2024-12-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=151698"},"modified":"2024-12-11T19:30:08","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T08:30:08","slug":"loch-ard-gorge-to-remain-closed-for-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/loch-ard-gorge-to-remain-closed-for-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Loch Ard Gorge to remain closed for summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>POPULAR tourist attraction Loch Ard Gorge will remain closed this summer as land managers continue to evaluate options for the site.<\/p>\n<p>A recent independent geotechnical inspection has confirmed significant safety risks are posed by the cliff&#8217;s instability.<\/p>\n<p>Beach access was closed by Parks Victoria in May 2023 following a rock fall over the steps, making the area unsafe for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) is continuing to work through site-specific environmental factors to understand whether site restoration is possible.<\/p>\n<p>This includes exploring medium- and long-term solutions to ensure safe access while preserving the area&#8217;s environmental and cultural values.<\/p>\n<p>GORCAPA director of infrastructure and planning Cath Olive said public safety was the top priority.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a responsible land manager, we have to take a safety-first approach when there&#8217;s a known risk of a landslide or cliff collapse,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand the importance of Loch Ard Gorge to the local community and visitors alike, and we&#8217;re grateful for everyone&#8217;s patience as we navigate the next steps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Visitors can continue to enjoy other locations within the Port Campbell National Park such as Gibon Steps, Sherbrook Beach and the Bay of Islands Coastal Park.<\/p>\n<p>To stay up to date with the latest parks information, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/parks.vic.gov.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parks.vic.gov.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>POPULAR tourist attraction Loch Ard Gorge will remain closed this summer as land managers continue to evaluate options for the site.
