EIGHT weeks of competition came to an end last week with the final day of the inaugural Coerver Cup.<\/p>\n

With more than 80 teams competing over the course of two months, Coerver Coaching Geelong director Adrian Leijer said it was the perfect ending to the competition with a huge buzz around Banyul Warri Fields in Torquay.<\/p>\n

“It went exceptionally well for it being the first time we’ve run this competition,” Leijer said.<\/p>\n

“We had about 620 kids participate in the Coerver Cup each week, and to hold the finals day last week was really cool.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“We just tried to get the most out of the kids’ development through that ‘5v5’ format, then it created that carnival-like atmosphere with the bar and restaurant open upstairs in the Grant Pavilion and people coming down to support the players.”<\/p>\n

The concept of the Coerver Cup provides young aspiring footballers the chance to work on their skills in the form of friendly five-a-side games, and also get their first taste of competitive football.<\/p>\n

Leijer said he has already had enquiries about whether the Coerver Cup will return in Term 1 of next year, but stated the concept will not return for some time.<\/p>\n

“We’ll have our holiday camps in January focusing more on skills, but we’re looking at locking in a three-day Easter Cup competition next year,” he said.<\/p>\n

“As for the Coerver Cup, it will certainly return next year at a similar time. As a community event, it ticked all of the boxes.”<\/p>\n
