AN ANNUAL mosquito management program is now underway on the Surf Coast to help reduce species numbers in the region.<\/p>\n
The program, which kicked off in November, involves the monitoring and treatment of major breeding sites of mosquito species in the region.<\/p>\n
The monitoring part of the program includes setting traps around breeding areas and sending off any captured mosquitos to be analysed in a laboratory.<\/p>\n
All data will then be used to determine whether additional treatment or public education is required.<\/p>\n
Surf Coast Shire council general member community life Damian Wright said the program aims to reduce mosquito numbers and the impact they have on community.<\/p>\n
“Mosquitoes are a natural part of the ecosystem and it’s not possible to eliminate all mosquitoes.<\/p>\n
“In addition to council’s program, residents can take steps around the home to assist control [of] numbers.”<\/p>\n
To help reduce mosquitos, residents can:<\/p>\n
Remove stagnant water in places like gutters, bird baths, ponds, old tyres, pot plants, buckets and toys<\/p>\n
Ensure openings to rainwater tanks are covered with mesh<\/p>\n
Put sand around the bases of pot plants to absorb excess water<\/p>\n
Keep roof gutters in good repair and remove leaves and debris so pools of water do not form, and<\/p>\n
Make sure swimming pools, spas and fish ponds are well maintained.<\/p>\n
“Mosquitoes can wreck an outdoor gathering pretty quickly, so it’s also important to protect yourself and your family, especially early in the morning or at dusk when the mosquitoes are most active,” Mr Waight added.<\/p>\n
To protect yourself, wear light coloured loose fitting clothing, use repellents and ensure windows and doors are fitted with flywire screens.<\/p>\n
