THE world’s longest running iron event is only days away and more than 250 competitors are locked in to compete.<\/p>\n

The 64th annual Jim Wall Iron Classic will be held on January 5 at Torquay Beach.<\/p>\n

The event will challenge athletes in all-round surf and water ability across swim, board, ski and running disciplines.<\/p>\n

Competitors ranging from Under 13s to senior men and women will take to the ocean to test their skills.<\/p>\n

Reigning champion Archie Vernon is set to defend his title, while in the open women’s there will more than likely be a new champion.<\/p>\n

The past two female winners, Grace Harris and Mia Cook will both miss the event due to Nutri-Grain Iron Series commitments.<\/p>\n

Torquay SLSC competition manager Matt Henderson said it was shaping up to be a fantastic day of surf racing.<\/p>\n

“We opened entries only a few weeks ago, and it’s been progressing really well. We’ve had a great mix of both local and interstate competitors.<\/p>\n

“This year we’ve capped entries at 300 to keep it manageable with the size of the beach due to the seawall damages.<\/p>\n

“There’ll be plenty of individual races for competitors to compete in, as well as the Jim Wall for those wanting to push themselves against the best.<\/p>\n

“It’s going to be a really fantastic and prestigious day.”<\/p>\n

A prize pot of $1,500 will be up for grabs for the men’s and women’s Jim Wall winners.<\/p>\n

Those to finish on the podium in the Under 13 to Under 17 division iron races will also take home cash incentives.<\/p>\n

“We are really wanting to recognise the prestige of the iron event, and the effort all these athletes put into their training and racing.<\/p>\n

“[The prize money] is a great reward for them regardless of their age and gender.”<\/p>\n
