MELBOURNE swimmers Conor Hayes and Dakoda Mathers claimed top honours at the Danger Ocean Swim Series at Cosy Corner on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Hayes (Surrey Hills) and Mathers (Nunawading) won the respective open male and female gender divisions in the marquee Danger 1000.<\/p>\n

Hayes finished with a time of 13:04, while Mathers was 53 seconds behind at 13:57.<\/p>\n

Supermaster 40-44 age group competitor Elizabeth Gardner was the first athlete across the line with a time of 12:14.<\/p>\n

In addition to the 1km main event, the race day also featured the 2.5km and 5km marathons and the 500m sprint.<\/p>\n

Hayes and Mathers both also won the 5km event, while Sam Sheppard and Zoe Jennings crossed first in the 2.5km.<\/p>\n

The Surrey Hills athlete topped off his day with a trifecta, winning the 500m, with Zoe McKenna taking out the women’s title.<\/p>\n

The Jan Juc SLSC fundraising event saw more than 1,200 athletes take to the water.<\/p>\n

Jan Juc SLSC fundraising and sponsorship manager Jodie Reyntjes said the event was a massive success.<\/p>\n

“It was a great day, and a perfect morning for racing with the sun out and calm conditions.<\/p>\n

“We had more long-distance swimmers than ever before, and terrific entry numbers across the board. The racing was fantastic.”<\/p>\n

She said more than $30,000 was raised for the club.<\/p>\n

“This figure is well up, and probably the best result in six or seven years. It’s a great result for us.”<\/p>\n
